The reggae music scene is once again in boom, thanks to upcoming artists like Ava Leigh who is likely to make a mark in the industry. She is no Jamaican and she's young. But she's able to give justice to the music of Golden Age reggae that started in mid 70s, long ago before she was born.
Remember the name, Ava Leigh. She is sweet and sexy. She's breezy and sensitive. And such characteristics made her music sound more appealing. This girl knows what she wants to do. She has embraced the reggae music because she felt like it had chosen her to do so.
She writes her own lyrics and they are mostly about her personal struggles and experiences. Ava loves to write and sing love songs, especially the ones that most people can relate to. This girl likes people to remember when they first heard her songs. She doesn't only want to excel in her craft, she wants to make memories in the process.
It was Ava Leigh's mother who had influenced her to like the genre. The latter used to dig the likes of "After Tonight," defined as a lover's rock classic of Matumbi. The mother and daughter tandem sung it a lot while the young Ava Leigh was growing up in Chester. She now has her own version of that song. It was re-invented the Ava way, sweet and soulful, which she sang together with Finley Quaye.
Ava Leigh claims to have many musical influences. Some of them include Lee Perry, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, the Skatalites, Sly and Robbie among so many others. The diversity of such inspirations may have contributed to the distinct sound that Ava is able to create with her own music.
A Brazilian song the fits perfectly as a wedding music, "Mas Que Nada" means "more than anything." This was originally written and performed by Jorge Ben. But this song also became the launching pad for artist, Sergio Mendes, and it even became his signature song.
Many artists have come up with their own versions of "Mas Que Nada." Even the advertisers got into the groove. Ava Leigh has her own rendition that was used for the TV commercials of Next, a popular clothing brand and one of UK's largest clothing retailers.
In September of 2007, as part of Next's 25th anniversary celebration, it has come up with a series of commercials. It was on its third part wherein Ava Leigh's rendition of "Mas Que Nada" was used. The ad featured Brazilian supermodel, Alessandra Ambrosio with Paul Sculfor.
The song is on the B-side of Ava Leigh's single, "Mad about the Boy." Both songs are currently available on iTunes.
Experience the breeze of her voice, her soul and essence on her lyrics and her distinct style. With so much flair up her sleeves, the industry will surely have enough room to accommodate a fresh talent like Ava Leigh.
