Here’s the scenario: You have a big project you need to get done. You have some brochures you need to design and write text for and a big poster you need to start designing soon so you can send it right away to a commercial printing company. But once you sit down your mind just won’t give you anything.

For those working by themselves this can be an even greater challenge to overcome. I’ve been there before, just as I’m sure most people who create anything for a living can attest to as well. It can be a horrible feeling to be staring at that computer screen or canvas and you just can’t think of what to do.

The good news is there are ways to get past that creative block.

One of the first and most important facts to remember is that even when you’re alone you aren’t really alone. The world around you is filled with different things to inspire you if you just take the time to pay attention to them.

No matter what form of advertising you’re doing I bet you’ll find plenty of examples from other companies. The point isn’t to look at everyone else’s commercial printing and just copy it, but to get a starting point.

That is the real issue when it comes to creative block, you just can’t figure out where to start. Once the wheels get turning it becomes a lot easier to let the process work itself out.

One thing to note is that you shouldn’t just focus on your competition’s marketing material, but also look at advertising from other industries. When you look at some marketing material from a company similar, but not quite within your field, you can still get a feel for a style you might not be as well acquainted with, which will increase the odds of sparking a new idea.

Another great way to get around the block is if you’re working for someone else, sit down and ask them what exactly they’re trying to say and do with their advertising. Once you know exactly what you’re going to be trying to design it can help spark a creative idea in how to approach it.

If you have a specific niche market you’re trying to market to, look at some material that your audience enjoys looking at. Read through some magazines they enjoy reading; get a feel for the visuals that will most appeal to them.

And really, the most important thing you can do is to keep your calm. The more stressed out you get yourself the harder of a time you’ll have breaking through the block. If you let yourself relax and stay receptive to new ideas you’ll find that any form of commercial printing will be easy for you to design.
