• To maintain consistency in naming system.
Every website has a domain name that follows the Domain Name system which is composed of four elements. The DNS is a type of web system where entire Internet service addresses are created, maintained and utilized.
The four elements that comprise Domain Name System are the server prefix, a domain name, domain suffix or the extension, and the country code. A good example of domain name is www.mybusiness.com – where www – the server prefix, mybusiness – domain name and the “com” – the domain suffix.
Having a website of your own is an advantage especially if you are a business owner. There are important things about a domain name that helps a business, so you should seriously consider registering your own domain to a particular domain registrar to achieve exclusivity and reflect professionalism.
Domain name registration involves easy step by step instructions. If you want to register your domain name, here’s what you should do.
Pick the perfect name. But don’t just consider one name. List a few good names that you would like to use. The other “names” are considered as a reserved if the first one was already taken. You will have to register this to ICANN -the organization that oversees internet addresses through a domain name registrar.
Have a credit card or PayPal account. This is for the purpose of paying for the domain. It is a requirement that most registrars have. Your credit card will be your key to claim and get the domain name immediately. The usual registration fee cost is around US$10 to US$35, depends on the registrar. By paying the fee, you will have the right to that domain name for a year and will have to renew it annually with the same amount per year.
If you have a web host, get the primary and secondary nameservers of your web host. Save the information wherever you want. This information can be obtained from the site’s FAQ’s or from the other documentation under the category of DNS or domain name transfer. If the information is nowhere to be found, email them.
If you don’t have a web host, you can allow the registrar to put your domain name to a temporary site specially made for you. This is to secure your domain name before others can have it.

Avoid too long domain names – A domain name that is too long does not serve any purpose. Visitors will find it difficult to remember and type every time they want to visit your website. You can register the name up to 63 characters, but it doesn’t mean you have to use all of these 63 characters.
Avoid Hyphens – Just like having too long names, putting hyphens will also make a web site difficult to remember. Sometimes, people mistakenly typed the domain name without a hyphen and make it difficult for them to return.
Reserve a .DOT com domain - .Com is so far, the most recognized domain name, anyone can register it, if it is available. But there is no advantage when it comes to determining search engine rankings according to the domain extension. Therefore, if a good .NET, .US, .ORG etc is available, you can consider registering them. However, .com is considered a much better extension since most people automatically types the .com extension.
Privacy of domain name – Private registration was recently become a practical option. Sites like WhoIs look up.com helps people find the owner of a particular web site. It provides information about the website’s basic details such as email address and phone number. But there are web owners who want to maintain their domain privacy, so they chose to keep the basic infos confidential. But there is always an additional cost when doing this.
