Are you looking for a new apartment to rent? If so, you may turn to your local newspaper classified section. This is a good start, but there are other places you can look for an apartment too. One of those places is Craigslist.org. With the exception of brokered apartments in New York City, it is free to post apartment rental listings on the website. Since it is free to post, you are likely to find many apartments for rent.

To get started, visit the main Craigslist.org website. From this page, select your state and then your next closest city. Craigslist is city based; however, they use a limited number of cities. Yours may not be posted, but that does not mean you can’t find local apartment rentals. Instead, choose the next closest city to get started.

Once on the city page you selected, look to the left-hand side of the page. You will see a search box. Often times, the default search setting is set to for sale listings. You must change this to housing. Then, enter in a search phrase to get started. A great general search phrase to start with is “rent.” However, if you are looking for something in particular, such as an apartment rental or a house rental, use these phrases to search too.

Performing a Craigslist search is the best way to find an apartment, but you can also browse your local website. On the main website for your city, such as Syracuse, New York, you will see columns with different options listed. Look for the housing section. Then, select which type of property you are looking for, such as apartment rentals. Since you are browsing, many results will show. You can view each of these results or tailor your search using the search box at the top of the page.

You now know how to find apartment rentals on Craigslist; however, be aware that there are apartment rentals scams that target the website. Avoid these scams by never paying a cent until you view an apartment first. A landlord who does not let you view the apartment you intend to rent is likely nothing more than a scammer who doesn’t even own apartments; they just want your money.
