Although some consider that eating squirrels is a cruelty, the fact is the squirrel meat is very tasty. Two of the most popular methods of preparing the squirrel meat is either in a stew or fried. Chefs recommend that young animals should be used for the second method and as for the first method; any animal will be just perfect for a tasty dinner. This article will try to provide full instructions of how to prepare a squirrel stew for you and your family.

In order to prepare a squirrel stew you will need the following items:

a. 2 squirrels, cleaned and cut into small pieces;

b. Dutch oven with lid

c. 2 tablespoons of oil;

d. 4 potatoes, cut into chunks;

e. 4 sliced carrots;

f. 1 large chopped onion;

g. 1 clove garlic, minced;

h. 1 tablespoon of Italian herbs;

i. Salt & pepper (if you desire);

j. Water.

Step 1 – The first thing you must do is to heat the oil in the bottom of a Dutch oven and rapidly brown the squirrel pieces on all sides;

Step 2 – Next thing to do is to cover the squirrel pieces with water and allow to slow boil for approximately two hours. After that, remove the squirrel pieces from the pot and set them aside in order to cool down;

Step 3 - Add herbs and vegetables to the pan so that the meat will be more tasteful, make sure you won’t overdo as you will ruin the taste. The next thing you must accomplish is to turn the heat down in order to simmer.

Step 4 – As soon as the squirrel pieces are cool enough to touch with your hands, remove the meat from the bones. Take the meat and put it back in the pot and throw away the bones as you won’t need them anymore. Add water to suit your tastes.

Step 5 – The stew must be simmered for another 1-2 hours, depending on the squirrel meat. If you like, you could add a tablespoon of cornstarch so that the gray will thicken. After that, you are done. Enjoy!
