Pharmacy technicians should hold a national pharmacy training certificate. Pharmacists usually prefer to employ certified pharmacy technicians. The regular course and learning procedure during their certification, molds them to be dedicated in their job. Pharmacy technicians are given due respect by all the patients for their sincere advice and service. With the increase in population and hospitals, the need will increase and pharmacy technicians will be in large demand.
With an ever increasing demand for health care, more and more students are considering a career as a pharmacist. Before you make that decision, you should become aware of the requirements and career opportunities available for pharmacists. As a pharmacy school student, I have not only experienced the application process but also researched many aspects of the pharmacy profession. As time passes, pharmacists continue to be given more and more responsibilities within the health care system. Contrary to popular belief, a pharmacist's job does not constitute counting pills from 9 to 5. Only 62% of pharmacists hold traditional community (retail) pharmacy positions (BLS).
Pharmacy Technician Careers
Pharmacy technicians who hold a certificate become perfect technicians, only if they communicate effectively. They should be precise communicators. Pharmacy technicians must ascertain that people understand their instructions. Pharmacy technicians should be knowledgeable in respect to the effects and ill effects of medicines.
Pharmacy Technicians
The eligibility criteria for recertification is to have completed twenty contact hours of pharmacy related topics, within the two-year certification period. Attending lectures, college course work and on-the-job training are all considered for awarding contact hours. It is mandatory to have a minimum of one contact hour in pharmacy law. Flexibility allows contact hours to be earned from different sources. Up to ten contact hours can be earned by working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Pharm.D. degree
The Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) requires a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate coursework (most students receive a bachelor's a degree prior to starting pharmacy school) followed by 3 to 4 years of Pharmacy school. Out of high school, students can apply for Pharmacy schools that have a joint undergraduate and Pharm.D. Program which lasts from 5 to 7 years. These programs are also known as "0-6 programs" or "early assurance programs." It is important to note that a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree is different than obtaining a Ph.D. or M.S. in Pharmacy.
A licensed pharmacy technician is the one who advises his patients. There are pharmacy technicians who get trained only on the job, but many pharmacists entertain only licensed technicians. Licensed pharmacy technicians are helpful as they are aware of the medicines and their side effects. The responsibility of pharmacy technicians varies according to the location. They take care of the shop on a whole like attending telephones, preparing bills, book keeping, handling cash and stock maintenance.
