Pregnancy And Your Feet
ByKamen Loze
During pregnancy hormones can do some interesting things to prepare your body for birth. One of the things they do is relax ligaments to help the body during birth. Unfortunately it is not only pelvic structures that can become more relaxed, but also your feet. The other main reason that you may become prone to flat feet during pregnancy is due to the natural weight gain that occurs. Not only do you gain weight, but your body's center of gravity changes quite dramatically forcing a change in gait.
Wearing properly fitting shoes during and after pregnancy is of particular importance. Although the ligaments relax in the foot during pregnancy, they do not stay relaxed. The post-pregnancy foot is at higher risk for developing foot problems. There are multiple reasons contributing to the increased risk. The flattened foot places excess stress on the ligament that holds up the arch. The weight gain from pregnancy places excess stress on the feet. Moms are also carrying their baby, added weight which transmits to the feet. Moms are staying at home more often and walking around in slippers and flexible shoes which are generally not supportive.
Drink a lot of water when you are pregnant. You must drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Water is the most natural therapy to flush out the excess toxins from the body. Thus, the water will expel all the toxic fluids of the body which would otherwise settle in the feet and cause them to swell. Drinking a lot of water could increase the frequency of urination in pregnant women, but that is actually a good sign, as urination is a way to expel the wastes from the body.
Another common foot problem seen in pregnancy is flat feet. This condition is seen later in pregnancy due to hormones which begin to relax the body's ligaments to prepare the birth canal for delivery. The pelvic bones need to become more flexible to allow this to happen, and the ligaments that hold the bones together must loosen. The hormones that allow this to occur will also effect foot ligaments as the hormones travel the body in the blood stream to get to the pelvis in the first place. As the foot ligaments loosen (and there are a lot of them), the structure of the foot become less rigid and some flattening of the arch occurs.
Whenever possible, elevate your legs during the course of the day and most definitely at night. Every night you are reminded of the fluid you are retaining during the day and may not even be aware of this. Have you ever noticed how often you find yourself getting up to the bathroom (voiding) in the middle of the night? This is because the fluid in your legs is being mobilized back into your blood stream and eliminated through your kidneys. While you are lying down/sleeping, your legs are at the level of your heart and gravity is not working against you. Your circulation is also not obstructed when you lie down, unlike when you are sitting.
As woman enjoy watching the bump grow week from week, month to month, but sometimes it comes with weight gain and water retention, which leads to the discomfort on her feet. Healthy weight gain during pregnancy can alter a woman's centre of gravity. This causes a new weight-bearing stance and adds pressure on feet and knees and that needs more attention while lifting anything, walking etc.
