Relationship Between Zinc And Hair Loss
ByRedmund
If you are going through them yourself, various sources may tell you that zinc supplements can fix your hair loss, but then again, numerous controversies have been coming out saying that zinc tablets can also trigger hair loss. Here are some facts about Zinc and hair Loss.
Zinc is a vital component to healthy hair, being that it is responsible for cell production, tissue growth and repair, and the maintenance of the oil-secreting glands of the scalp. It also plays a large role in protein synthesis and collagen formation. For this reason, zinc is important for both hair maintenance and dandruff prevention. Most Americans are deficient in zinc. Most foods of animal origin, particularly seafood, contain good amounts of zinc; oysters are particularly rich in zinc. Zinc is also found in eggs and milk, although in much smaller amounts. Zinc from sources such as nuts, legumes, and natural grains is of a different type than those found in animal sources and is not easily used by the body, although oats are a good source of zinc that is readily used by the body.
Zinc works with the several proteins that are located throughout your body in order to create a support system for your body. Zinc is needed for cell division, in the growth and maintenance of muscles, for controlling oil glands, and is also required for the synthesis of protein and collagen - which is great for wound healing and a healthy skin.
Deficiency in zinc can contribute a lot to hair shedding because without zinc and other related minerals, you hair shafts get weakened, causing hair breakage and very slow hair regrowth. Zinc benefits for hair include promotion of cell reproduction, tissue growth and repair of broken tissues. It also maintains the oil-secreting glands that are attached to your hair follicles, thus decreasing their chances of falling off.
It is not surprising that many suffer from zinc deficiency since zinc is destroyed in the milling process and is also lost in cooking. In addition, a zinc deficiency can result in a poor immune system, heightened sensitivities and allergies, night blindness, loss of smell, white spots under finger nails, skin problems, sleep disturbances etc.
Aside from zinc, the mineral selenium is also associated with hair loss. Selenium, along with zinc, can help your body properly utilize proteins and hormones to produce more hair. It has also been found that vitamin A, C, E and vitamin B6 aid these two minerals in promoting hair regrowth.
Well, there is a certain truth in the studies that claim that zinc can also trigger hair loss. BUT! Hair loss can only be triggered by too much zinc in the body. The recommended daily amount of zinc is only about 11 milligrams. To counter hair loss, a dosage of 60 milligrams is effective. Taking too much or taking zinc supplements longer than recommended (more than three or four weeks) would do more harm than good to your hair. This is very probable because too much zinc in the body can hinder the absorption of other minerals such as copper, iron, magnesium and manganese, all of which may also take part in maintaining healthy hair. For instance, copper helps in forming blood vessels so that lack of it may be detrimental to the scalp and may limit the growth of your hair.
