Squirrel Eating, From A British Perspective
ByJohn P.
Squirrel meat wasn’t very popular among British people although from time to time in the British cookery it appeared as a dinner solution. More than that, during the World War II period, the Ministry of Food strongly promoted the benefits of eating a squirrel soup or even a squirrel pie. However, the carnivores were strongly against these suggestions.
The situation has slowly but surely changed in the last decades as squirrel recipes are more and more preferred by families as they consider the meat to be very tasty. This statement is entirely true as squirrel meat can be found in butcher shops, elegant restaurants, village pubs and farmers’ market so as you can see the demand is quite strong.
A person by the name of Barry Shaw, a person that sales meat at the Wirral Farmers Market located near Liverpool said that “part of the interest is curiosity and novelty” and “it’s a great conversation starter for dinner parties”. However there is a controversy regarding squirrel meat as some have an obvious difficulty regarding the cuteness versus deliciousness ratio – lovely little eyes, adorable face, tiny claws – other sustain that eating squirrels is a method to do something valuable as well as good for the environment while still enjoying a unique gastronomical experience.
Some of you may ask why eating squirrel is a good thing for the environment, the answer is quite simple: there are millions of squirrels speeded through United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales to be more precise). So by eating squirrel meat British people literally save the nature and this habit is more and more popular as the demand at British butcheries, pasty makers and restaurants is high.
The problem with squirrels is in fact quite simple: there are just too many squirrels, especially grey squirrels which are a great threat to the red squirrels which are considered a true British icon. Rufus Carter, the managing director of the Patchwork Traditional Food Company said that “when the grays show up, it puts the reds out of business”. Back in 2006 the “Save Our Squirrels” campaign began which promoted the gray squirrel meat, providing squirrel recipes so that British people would eat more gray squirrels in order to protect the national red squirrel.
Some people affirm that the reason why the squirrel meat is becoming so popular is due to the easy availability and because of the global economic situation which isn’t very good at the moment. However, preparing the squirrel meat for dinner is a very difficult thing to do but we will leave it up to the people that deal with these issues.
Chefs from around the world have various opinions as some consider the squirrel to be a very tasty meat while others affirm that the meat isn’t that great and more than that they consider that eating a squirrel is pure cruelty. Although opinions vary, the squirrel meat is popular among the world and squirrel recipes are getting more and more popular among household and more. We leave it up to you to join one side or the other.
