First of all, the tuque (toque) is a wonderful thing and I am extremely grateful to the guy who invented it. Actually, the tuque was more likely invented by a caring mother (Marie Chapdelaine?) who couldn't bare seeing her kids go outside to play without something really warm on their heads.

Personally I've always been a big tuque fan! Not only do I appreciate being warm when the temperature plummets below freezing, but I also enjoy flaunting my rugged, Paul Bunyan-esque looks which I would never have without a knitted cap atop my head. Notwithstanding my keen fashion sense, there's something about wearing a winter cap that has always bothered me.

I have heard it said you shouldn't go out in the cold without a hat because 90% of your body head escapes through your head when you're not wearing one. We've all heard that one, n'est-ce pas?. Sure I get it that the head has many more blood vessels than most other parts of the body, and if you don't cover the head you will certainly get cold much faster. But who came up with that 90% figure? Think about it: if your hat holds in 90% of your body heat, then all the other clothes you are wearing are holding in only 10%. If that's true and if keeping warm is your main objective, then you are nine times better off going outdoors totally naked with your tuque on your head than fully dressed yet without a hat! I don't buy that! By the way, the Discovery Channel recently reported that 74% of your body heat escapes through your head. Whatever... I still don't buy it!

Of course, no one can dispute the claim that the tuque is a great look, eh Just don't push it!
