If you own a pool it is essential that you take every precaution to ensure the safety of your children and any other children who may be able to access it. One common safety tip known by most parents is that the area around a pool should be fenced. Just keep in mind the dangers you will want to watch out for so that the children can remain safe and enjoy there pool.
Fencing - County law states most citizens must have a fence around their pool, especially if they have children living at the home. Your gate should be securely locked when the pool is not in use, with keys to it kept safely in a secured area. Building a fence that is at least six feet high is also recommended as many children view fences more as pieces of climbing equipment than as deterrents! Make certain that yours is tall enough so that climbing will be prevented. Each community's fencing requirements vary, so you can find what your community requires at your local county offices.
Alarms - Pool owners who have toddlers or young children of walking age often find that door alarms help deter the youngsters from getting into the pool area unsupervised. Many of the home wireless door alarms can do the job, insuring that someone does not sneak into your backyard without you knowing it. An alarm on your pool is a great idea. According to Good Housekeeping, Poolguard Alarms are currently the best thing available on the market. There will be a distinct beeping sound to alert you if something falls into the pool. The best news is that normal surface tension caused by the wind or leaves that have fallen doesn't set it off. This is one item you will want to have at your pool side just in case one of the neighborhood kids or your own accidentally fall in – this way, they can be pulled out safely!
Pool Covers - Pool covers are both important and hazardous. Solid pool covers that cover the pool entirely in a shell-like fashion are most effective. However, the soft covers are less costly and are the most commonly found. And although they may be available at a lower cost, they may present a higher risk as children often get caught in them and find if difficult, if not impossible, to get out. Additionally, be cautious with electric or automatic covers for your pool. Over the years there have been countless stories of a young one accidentally getting trapped under the cover when the controls are activated.
Plants - When dealing with leafy plants, they are not a big problem when it comes to shade over a pool. But these apparently harmless plants can cause problems when their discarded leaves become wet, causing adults and children alike to slip and slide. These leaves, along with many flowering plants, can also cause many filter problems.
Wooden Block - One of the best thing's to do if you live in the country is to place a medium-sized wooden block in your pool while you’re not using it. Be certain that it is big enough to float, as well as support some weight. If any small animals fall into your pool, this small wooden block will allow them to get back out on their own and without any risk of drowning.
Pool Toys – Ensure that they are stored in a safe place. Any toys can be hazardous underfoot. To avoid accidents, be sure pool toys are safely stored away when not in use, either in a plastic container kept in the pool area, under the pool deck, or in the garage. To avoid possible chemical transference to pool toys, do not put them in the same location as pool chemicals. The chemicals can easily get on the surface of toys, which poses a possible risk of poisoning to your children.
Chemicals - Storing your pool supplies is easiest if you keep stuff like your chlorine tablets and your PH balance kits in the pool area. However, you must always be certain that these chemicals are locked up. A simple box or cabinet near the pool will not be sufficient; special precautions must be taken with these, and locked boxes are a good step in the right direction. The problem with large boxes is simple: what child would not like to find out what is being kept in that large, plastic box? The best place to keep your pool chemicals is away from your children and the pool, such as in the garage or shed. This will keep them out of the reach of your kids, yet still in an easily accessible location for you.
While these are all common sense suggestions, these are just the types of things that are most often overlooked. If it has been a while since the last time you have used the pool, make sure that the pool area is safe. When the warm weather comes and you are setting up your pool area, be certain that you make this area a safe place for the ones you cherish the most: your children.
