Because servo motors are used in robotics, they tend to be smaller in size. The biggest benefit of a servo is the amount of pressure it provides in comparison to the amount of electricity used. A circuit is usually built within the servo unit. It will have a smaller motor to accommodate a smaller engine. The size of the motor is proportional to the amount of torque delivered.
One of the outstanding features of a servo is that it has an output shaft. Because of the output shaft, the servo can be positioned with a coded signal. In order to keep the same position, the same signal must be used. If the angle of the servo motor changes, you can be assured it is because of a change of signal.
In addition to robotics, servos can be used in a multitude of different fields. Radio controlled airplanes are another common application. In addition to having a wide radius, a servo motor can also travel anywhere from zero to one hundred eighty degrees. The motor can sense how much power needs to be applied. If the object is traveling a greater distance, more of the engine power will be consumed.
The way the angle of the servo moves or rotates is based upon the main control wire. As a pulse is sent through the control wire, the length of the signal will determine the angle at which the servo motor changes. Typically a pulse is sent every twenty milliseconds. A long pulse will cause a change in the servo motor of greater than ninety degrees, while a short pulse will cause a change in direction of less than ninety degrees.
Hopefully, if you are considering buying a motor in the near future, this informational article will have given you the background needed to make an educated decision.
