For those traveling abroad, sometimes the lifestyle and customs of a particular country can be confusing and frustrating. This article will give you an explanation of dining abroad and some of the restaurant choices that you will be faced with.

The word restaurant is a blanket word describing any number of dining establishments. For example, an America diner is quite different than a buffet style restaurant and a sports bar. In France, a bistro is different than a brasserie and a cafe. But they are all referred to as a restaurant.

You will first need to decide what type of fare and atmosphere that you want, and then direct yourself to a dining establishment that offers that type of food.

 Bistro-A small restaurant, sometimes offering live music in a quaint atmosphere, with a small, light menu.

 Brasserie-A restaurant with an intimate setting that has non-traditional hours of operation. It is not unusual to visit a brasserie after the theatre.

 Buffet-style restaurant-A restaurant that generally serves every course that is presented under glass, so that the patron may serve themselves and choose exactly which salad, entrée, bread, and dessert they want. Most buffet style restaurants offer a fixed price unless otherwise noted and often offer all-you-can-eat options.

 Cabaret-A nightclub that offers entertainment, often in the form of a floor show, which serves meals during the show.

 Café-Very often a coffeehouse with a very limited menu to include dessert items.

 Diner-A small restaurant that is not franchised offering homemade soups, sandwiches, cakes and/or pies. A diner might offer breakfast fare, along with regular menu items all day.

 Drive-In or Drive thru-A means of dining where upon you do not leave your vehicle and food is brought to your car. It is considered “Fast Food.”

 Pub-A bar, sometimes offering a limited menu; also referred to as a tavern.

 Road House-A restaurant generally located on the outskirts of a town, often offering entertainment (in the form of a band), with a bar and restaurant.

 Sports bar-A restaurant and bar serving appetizers, salads, hamburgers and pizza. Large televisions are installed throughout for the enjoyment of watching sporting events while dining.

 Tapas Bar-A Spanish style bar and restaurant in which patrons either take small snacks that are priced separately from a buffet, or order them from a menu. This type of menu gives customers an opportunity to taste several different items.

 Tavern-Predominantly a bar, with a large selection of beer, that serves appetizers, hearty dishes, soups and bread with a bar atmosphere.

 Trattoria-Usually a casual Italian restaurant.

When dining abroad be sure to check the country’s custom for gratuity. Most European countries have the tip factored into the bill. However, American restaurants generally do not practice this unless you are with a large party. If you are unsure, just ask. Any server will be glad to answer that question.
