Writing As A Career
Byjacobson
All right, I know all writers are individuals. To some, 'successful' might mean just getting one article published. Others want a string of best-selling novels, recognition in the supermarket and megabucks in the bank account. So, for the purposes of this article, we'll define 'successful' as "achieving regular or ongoing publication credits in tandem with a growing income". If you have not joined the literary ranks by writing your story yet, now is the perfect time. Why not make it one of your resolutions to write a few words every day?
Short stories are a great way to launch your writing career, pick a favourite subject ie a pet, your holidays, a special day at work or a strange/amusing incident etc. etc. - there's a never ending list! Write a brief plot, personalise your characters, maybe add a theme (honesty prevails sort of stuff), write down a running order and your half way there.
Another ideal first venture is to write a review or an article, the very backbone of the Internet is comprised of articles and reviews. If someone breaks wind, within a week it has been reviewed and some expert has written a series of articles on it! Have a look around the net for reviews and articles you'll see exactly what I mean.
Freelance Writers
Here are some tips for getting focused on developing your freelance writing career and staying that way:
1. Brainstorm for a few minutes and make a list of all the things you like to write about. Once you've got several things on your list, narrow the list down to just your top two areas of interest. Stick with these two areas or topics for awhile. Any writing or research activities that don't come within these two areas of focus should be set aside - for now.
2. Every Sunday evening, or Monday morning, sketch out your marketing plan for the week. And remember, keep your two areas of interest in mind when you do this. Only put things on your marketing plan for the week that relate to your two areas of interest. If you've decided you love to write about parenting, for example, but you'd like to finish that novel you started years ago, don't even think about the novel right now.
Writing Career
Whatever you pursue, the good thing about hard news and features for both papers and magazines is that you can use your creative writing skills for virtually any story. A "featurey" lead is all the rage anyway. I wish I had more concrete advice for you, but perhaps these comments can help you find the right path for you.
You're aware that you can do the creative feature-writing you love at a newspaper, right? A lot of my newspaper career was in the "Living" section of various newspapers (the section containing the soft news, features, articles on health, technology, recipes, interesting people, etc.)
